Chapter Forty-Three

There was no blast, which probably meant no shotgun—at least not in this room. Or it could simply mean the trigger had not yet been pulled. What there was, was more thick darkness.

Their light beams cut through the black of the large room. Every other piece of furniture seemed to provide cover for an armed homeowner.

Yet Terri knew she had to sacrifice a second of reaction time to properly identify what she was shooting. You did not break into a home and just start shooting into the dark at sounds, even if you were in a killer’s house.

Not to mention that this may not be James’s house at all. After all, criminals, and especially serial killers, had been known to lie every now and again.

Ros had no such one-second rule. As far as she was concerned, she was in the dark, spooky house of a serial killer. A serial killer who wouldn’t hesitate to kill her and her sister. Somebody may die in this creepy house this morning, but it wouldn’t be her or Terri.

The room they were in had tall and full plants. One of them was a cactus the size of a man. Ros came within a fraction of a second from blowing it away. “Jesus!” she said, before again breaking her promise not to curse.

Terri flinched. “What?”

“I was about to light that cactus up.”

“There’s nothing in here,” said Terri.

They crept through the rest of the first floor, which seemed to never end. They froze each time the floor creaked, which was often. The rooms were sparsely decorated with furniture that could have been purchased a hundred years ago. None of the rooms they covered so far had anything that gave a hint of James.

Terri took the lead as they labored futilely under the creaking stairs to be silent. She reached the landing and motioned for Ros to wait. If James or Mr. or Mrs. NRA was waiting on them, she didn’t want Ros to be a target.

The hallway was ridiculously long. The house didn’t make sense unless at least a half dozen or more adults lived in it. If this really were James’s house, how’d he get it? Then she thought about Dennis.

He lived like a successful business owner. Well, there was the answer. Dennis was a successful business owner. It’s just that his businesses, plural, happened to be illegal. Obviously, James shared the same career path.

“Cover me while I search the rooms,” Terri whispered.

They crept down the dark hall. If there were someone upstairs, how could the person not hear them? Terri went into the first room while Ros stood guard in the hallway. Each room provided nothing.

Ros whispered, “You’d think the panty sniffer would’ve dropped a hint. I mean, one pair of drawls on the floor or something.”

Terri agreed. She’d found nothing. But they still had the rest of this floor and the whole third floor. She pointed her light into the next room. It was a large bedroom and office that was out of sync with the rest of the house.
